1625 Independent People seeks Board Members

1625 Independent People (1625ip) supports young people in the South-West who are facing homelessness or leaving care. They offer a lifeline of support, providing safe and stable housing alongside practical and emotional guidance. Through their programs, young people gain the skills they need to build healthy relationships, live independently, and access employment or training. The Charity has been working with young people in the South West for over 40 years. They help approximately 1,600 people aged 16-25 per year, and despite multiple and complex needs, over 80% go on to succeed.

The organisation provides much more than just a secure home for young people. They connect them with a network of trustworthy people and a range of support specialists, including mental health and job coaching experts. A key aspect of their work is providing access to education, employment and training. 1625ip empowers young people by unlocking unseen potential. They provide opportunities that build confidence, encourage healthy risk-taking, and equip young people to make a positive difference in their communities.

The future looks bright for 1625ip. They're in the early stages of some exciting new projects, including a major renovation of their Grade II listed headquarters, Kingsley Hall. This renovation will create a welcoming space with a cafe and new training areas. Additionally, they’ll deliver the UK’s largest ‘What Works’ impact trail, aiming to get more young people into education, employment and training. To support their expanding and diversified services, 1625 Independent People (1625ip) is seeking to strengthen its governance and financial stability by recruiting two new Board Members.

Board Members work collaboratively with the executive team to achieve the highest operational performance standards. They use skills, knowledge and experience to develop the strategic direction of the organisation and set long-term targets. There are 5 Board meetings per year to assess the progress of the Charity against agreed objectives. In addition to this, there are 3 to 4 committee meetings, an away day and several optional events with young people.

1625ip are looking for:

  • One fundraising expert with a proven track record in charity fundraising.

  • Another expert who will bring valuable skills to the organisation. They’re open to candidates from various backgrounds, but experience in commercial enterprises, community/social enterprises, housing management, or social care would be a plus.

The successful candidates will be passionate about helping young people reboot their lives and thrive as adults. Previous Board or Trustee experience is not necessary, as a full induction programme will be provided alongside ongoing support. The Charity strives to better represent the young people that they support, and therefore encourage applications from minority groups, particularly Black/Black British and Muslim candidates. They also encourage applications from people with relevant lived experience.
