Bristol Cathedral is a historic building and place of worship where everyone is welcome. They are open 365 days per year, with a rich programme of events, services, heritage tours and art exhibitions. The Charity provides sanctuary to people facing challenging circumstances and support for people in need, particularly those experiencing homelessness.

The organisation believes in being open, generous, creative and brave. With over 300,000 annual visitors, the Cathedral is a welcoming space for diverse communities to come together and find peace. The Cathedral has many fascinating features, including the 12th Century Chapter House, a tranquil garden and a recently renovated cafe. They’re currently seeking a Finance Director who can continue their vision to grow in scale, reach and impact.

You may imagine that working in a Cathedral is quiet and sedate, however, the reality is quite different. While there are moments when you can reflect within the peace and beauty of the building, daily life is busy and varied. No two days are the same working with the Charity’s vibrant community of ~40 staff, a committed congregation, and strong volunteer network.

As Finance Director, you’ll provide strategic financial leadership for the organisation and its trading subsidiary, Bristol Cathedral Enterprises Ltd. You’ll work closely with the COO and Chair of the Finance Committee, developing a strategy to support the annual budget and long-term planning. Your responsibilities will include preparing financial reports and statements, ensuring compliance with regulatory bodies, and formulating systems to assist with decision-making. Furthermore, as part of the Senior Management Group, you will provide visible and engaged leadership across the organisation.

The Cathedral hopes to hear from skilled communicators with experience leading a busy finance department. The ideal candidate will be ICAEW, ACCA or CIMA qualified, with a background in financial/business planning. They will be skilled at preparing statutory reports and building strong relationships with colleagues, volunteers and external partners. Moreover, the Finance Director will be an enthusiastic and proactive leader, who can help others to evaluate, learn and develop. Experience managing property assets or working within the Charity sector is desirable, but not essential.

This is an opportunity to shape the future of a historic organisation and make a positive impact on the community.
