The Client
The Board of St Pauls Carnival CIC approached Moon Executive Search to conduct a national search campaign to source a new Non-Executive Director to join their board.
Moon has a long association with St Pauls, having successfully completed on the search for the Executive Director appointment of LaToyah McAllister Jones in the past.
Since its beginnings back in 1968, St Pauls has become one of Bristol’s biggest attractions. Crossing generations through a celebration of Afro-Caribbean culture, the music and dance brings people together in the community.
St Pauls Carnival Community Interest Company (CIC) was formed in February 2017 to help create a stable and sustainable future to promote and celebrate African Caribbean culture and traditions, and to run an accessible and inclusive world-class Carnival and supporting events.
The Carnival is a vehicle to inform, engage and inspire people socially and artistically, and the CIC works with local people to increase economic benefits to the community.
Our Approach
Moon Executive Search is in contact with NEDs and Advisors across the UK and has reach into many sectors including the performing arts, carnival, theatre, dance and music.
Knowing the Board well and appreciating the fantastic international reputation that the carnival has, Vanessa and the team readily felt they understood what would be required to make a successful appointment.
After speaking at length with the board about their perception of what an ideal candidate would bring to the NED role, we embarked on a search to attract candidates not only from our existing network, but also from a broader national perspective.
Having identified a strong list of prospective list of candidates and spoken at length to each one about the requirements of the position, we finalised the shortlist and introduced each to the Board to start the formal selection process.
Our Solution
After lengthy discussions with candidates and careful consideration of their priorities, the Board appointed Lucio Mesquita as Non-Executive Director.
Lucio has had a significant career with the BBC in the UK and South America and has also worked for the Guardian Media Limited in Trinidad and Tobago.
He brings a strong track record of developing and implementing innovative concepts and organisational change in a collaborative way.
His background of executive leadership, journalism, media, communications and institutional relations, often involving multicultural and international operations, coupled with his significant NED and Trustee experience, made him the stand-out candidate for the Board.
His other appointments include the Creative Youth Network in Bristol, Chair of Alliance Sport and Board Director at Ujima Radio.
Vanessa Moon, Founding Director, said:
“Lucio really stood out as a potential Non-Exec Director for St Pauls CIC, given his expertise in media and his networks, both internationally and across communities in Bristol. He will be a fantastic Non-Exec and his experience will help drive the coverage of the carnival to new heights.’
LaToyah McAllister Jones, Executive Director of St Pauls, said:
‘It was a difficult decision because of the strength of the shortlist, but the board decided on Lucio due to his understanding of the media landscape, as well as the communities of Bristol and his keen interest in international affairs. We are so grateful to the team at Moon Executive Search for all of their continued help and support.’
