Bristol Students’ Union: Trustee

TRUSTEE (UNPAID VOLUNTEER)

Can you help shape the future of a charity that improves the lives of 26,000 members?

2021 is a great time to join Bristol Students’ Union as a Trustee. We are just implementing a new strategic cycle; preparing for a major new development (including a physical move to the heart of the Bristol campus) and are involved in a new campus at Temple Quarter.

You will be helping us actively address the most pressing issues facing students today including access to education, mental health, accommodation, race inequality, poverty, inclusivity, and internationalisation.

We are looking for a strategic and committed Trustee with previous Board experience (or equivalent governance experience) to support the Students’ Union work; directing, shaping, and developing the organisation. You will help provide strategic, financial and governance oversight to help us achieve the vision of the Best Student Life.

The role will be to contribute to a dynamic and growing organisation with a progressive management team, talented staff, and dedicated student officers.

Part business, part charity, part membership body – Bristol SU is a seriously fun place to work.  The professional staff do something extraordinary every day: they support student leaders to give people a voice in their education, help people get the most out of their student experience and help people make the change they want in the world.

They have over 26,000 members, 350 clubs and societies, a huge range of professional services, and a new strategy working with students to create an inclusive and supportive University community. Bristol SU is a registered charity, and a company limited by guarantee with a turnover of circa £4million, employing around 55 salaried staff as well as a team of student staff.

If you have the time to commit and enjoy the idea of working with students then we are particularly interested in hearing from you, especially any applicants with any of the following experience:

  • Finance or Accountancy

  • Risk Management

  • C-suite levelled experience

Ideally you will be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience of helping organisations succeed.

  • Sharing the SU values and being committed to working for and with students.

  • Knowing how to think strategically, with sound judgement, keeping the long-term vision in mind.

  • Being ready and willing to give something back, volunteering your time, skills, and knowledge to make a real difference for our 26,000 members.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: Bristol Students’ Union and Moon Executive Search are committed to equality of opportunity for all. Bristol Students’ Union are proud to have Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity as one of our core values. We are committed to challenging injustice, supporting others to overcome systemic barriers and seeking to open access to all of our student members.

We encourage applicants who have lived experience of overcoming barriers or adversity. We want to support diverse and inclusive work environments and are actively looking for people who share our values and beliefs.

We welcome applications from individuals regardless of their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, age, gender, or disability status.

Time Requirements: Currently up to 10 online Trustee Board meetings & 10 online Trustee Committee meetings PA (not all Trustees are needed) held on a weekday and last approximately 1.5 hours.  Ideally you would sit on at least 1 of the committee groups.  These meetings may change for 2021/22.

It is expected that you will attend the Trustee Training and an annual Trustee Away Day (held in Oct). There are other events like the annual awards night in Jun, Welcome Fair in Sep where you are very much welcome and invited to attend.

Remuneration: Trustees are not remunerated but travel and other reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
