The Met Office is a world-renowned leader in weather and climate science. Their data is used by individuals and governments worldwide to make informed decisions – saving lives and improving people’s livelihoods. Beyond its weather and climate expertise, the Met Office has also been recognised for its excellent workplace culture. It has received multiple awards, including being named a "Great Place to Work UK 2024" and a leader in tech and women's workplace culture.
The Met Office Scientific Advisory Committee (MOSAC) independently assesses the quality and relevance of the Met Office's research and innovation program. MOSAC also identifies any scientific shortcomings in the program's ability to meet strategic objectives and customer requirements. They’re seeking a Chair to lead the committee and ensure the Met Office remains at the forefront of weather and climate science.
The Chair will collaborate with Met Office senior science and technology leadership to determine the format and scope of the annual MOSAC meeting. They will oversee the production of an annual written report summarising findings and recommendations, which will be presented to the Met Office Board on behalf of all MOSAC experts. In conjunction with Met Office leadership, they will select new committee members, ensuring diversity and breadth to address the wide range of topics studied by the Met Office. Additionally, the Chair may provide independent advice to the Met Office, for example, serving on the selection committee for the organisation's annual science awards.
The Met Office is seeking a skilled communicator, with internationally recognised expertise in one or more of weather, climate science and technology. The successful candidate will have experience advising large organisations on science/technology, either from a leadership role or independently. They will be able to challenge, support and encourage a culture of scientific excellence in an environment of rapid change and 24/7 operational delivery. Furthermore, the Chair will be able to manage relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
This is a fantastic opportunity to join the leading authority on climate science and contribute towards ground-breaking research.
