For nearly 40 years, Milestones Trust has provided care to adults with learning disabilities and mental health needs. The organisation grew out of a shift in policy in the 1980s, moving such work out of the National Health Service and into the community. Milestones initially served the greater Bristol and South Gloucestershire area but expanded its reach into Swindon, Wiltshire, and Bath and North East Somerset. They offer supported living, residential and nursing services, providing opportunities for people with complex needs to live happy and fulfilling lives.
Milestones has a reputation for high-quality service provision. They consistently outperform the average Care Quality Commission ratings, with all of their services classified as Good or Outstanding. The organisation supports over 530 individuals and employs 1,300 people. By promoting health, wellbeing, independence and engagement they transform lives, one step at a time.
The health and social care sector is growing and changing – adopting new models of care. The ongoing integration of health and social care is leading to new commissioning and service provision, within a climate of reduced funding across social care. Milestones are changing how they develop and deliver services while continuing to provide exceptional community-integrated support. To help achieve this goal, the organisation is seeking four Trustees to join their Board.
The Board of Trustees sets the Trust’s values, standards and strategic direction. They ensure necessary systems are in place to achieve objectives, monitoring the performance of management against such objectives. Trustees utilise independent judgement and their experience for the benefit of Milestones, their stakeholders and the wider community. They are responsible for preparing and approving annual budgets, reports and accounts alongside risk identification and mitigation. Furthermore, Trustees act as ambassadors for the organisation, engaging positively with external stakeholders and the local community.
Milestones hopes to hear from candidates with experience working in social care, either directly or from the commissioning side, such as in local government, quality assurance and related compliance functions. They also welcome applications from individuals skilled in accounting, human resources, property, or organisational culture. One of the recruited Trustees will serve as the Vice Chair, supporting the work of the Chair. This candidate is likely to have a wide business background and experience as a senior leader in a large, complex organisation. All Trustees will be committed to the organisational values and be passionate about supporting people with complex needs to live happy and fulfilling lives.
