For over 30 years, Second Step has been a beacon of hope in Bristol and the South West, championing mental health and empowering individuals to take control of their futures. Their vision is a world where everyone affected by mental health problems can create a positive future. The Charity works towards this by providing tailored support to those facing mental health challenges and complex needs.
Collaborating closely with the NHS, local authorities, and other organisations, Second Step offers a range of services rooted in recovery, strength-based approaches, and trauma-informed care. By fostering resilience, self-management skills, and peer support, they help individuals overcome obstacles and build fulfilling lives. Second Step aims to create a brighter future by reducing mental health inequalities and promoting community inclusion.
Second Step is seeking additional Board members to strengthen the Board. Specifically, they are looking for one person experienced in mental health services and another with organisational development expertise. This is an exciting period for the Charity as it takes on more responsibilities in the health sector and consolidates its services. The Board will ensure that the organisation is governed effectively to meet current and future demands while retaining Second Step's values, mission, and vision.
As a Trustee, you’ll oversee financial and business plans, ensuring effective control and risk management frameworks are in place. By advising on policies and procedures, you will help the Charity achieve its aims and objectives while complying with relevant regulations. Your role will also involve monitoring the performance of the CEO and senior managers and representing Second Step as an ambassador.
The Charity hopes to hear from candidates skilled in strategic decision-making and motivating teams to deliver a vision. One Trustee will bring experience in mental health delivery, from a senior strategic or operational level, while the other Trustee will have a proven track record in organisational development. Both successful candidates will have an understanding of governance principles for charitable organisations and be able to build strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. They will have the business and commercial acumen to work towards medium and long-term plans while navigating a period of growth and new business challenges. Furthermore, the Trustees will be aligned to the values and ethos of Second Step, demonstrating a commitment to mental health and equal opportunities.
