SS Great Britain seeks Director of Finance (Company Secretary)

Key information:

  • Location: Bristol.

  • Hybrid working model: minimum 3 days per week on-site.

  • Salary: £60-70k per annum.

  • Closing date: Friday 7th March.

  • Option of a four-day week with compressed hours or five days if full-time.

In the 54 years since the SS Great Britain returned to Bristol, the SS Great Britain Trust has continued the work of the pioneering volunteers who saved the ship, transforming a rusting hulk into one of the city’s leading visitor attractions and a groundbreaking story of maritime history and conservation. In addition to the ship, the site comprises the Brunel Institute, the Dockyard Museum, the Being Brunel interactive experience, a café, a gift shop, and event facilities – collectively creating a unique cultural experience.

The Trust is embarking on a process to define its vision and mission for the future. This will involve continued stewardship of its heritage assets, while also focusing on the following areas:

●      Widening engagement with a diverse range of stakeholders.

●      Diversification and growth of its commercial portfolio.

●      Digitisation of key functions across the organisation to achieve greater efficiency and improve key management information.

●      A new approach to marketing and communications.

●      Greater focus on fundraising and its integration across the wider organisation.

SS Great Britain is seeking a Director of Finance to guide the organisation through this exciting period.

As Finance Director, you’ll provide strategic leadership to the Trust, developing its financial strategy and ensuring the Leadership Management Team (LMT), Finance & Audit Committee, and Board have the information needed to maintain the Charity's economic viability. You will lead the on the development of a new digital infrastructure strategy for the organisation and will be responsible for corporate oversight as the Company Secretary. Moreover, your responsibilities will include working closely with the CEO and the Leadership Team, exploring opportunities for development and implementing the best financial practices.

The Trust is seeking a qualified accountant (or equivalent) with extensive experience leading teams, familiarity with accounting systems and digital infrastructure, and a track record of collaboratively delivering diverse projects across an organisation.

 The successful candidate will have proven experience at Finance Director or Deputy Director level in a similarly sized organisation, alongside an understanding of cross-organisational digital systems. They will have a background working with Boards and Trustees to develop long-term financial strategies and be adept at managing projects involving multiple stakeholders. Furthermore, the Finance Director will be skilled in business case preparation and presentation and responding to tenders and bids. Knowledge of Charity reporting is desirable, but not essential.
