(Closed) St. Paul’s Carnival CIC seeks Chair of the Board

Since its creation as St. Paul’s Festival back in 1968, St. Paul’s Carnival has grown in size, impact and reputation to become one of the UK’s most inclusive and accessible events. The iconic event promotes the creative spirit of music, art and movement while celebrating African Caribbean culture and traditions.

St. Paul’s Carnival CIC (Community Intrest Company) is a modern, dynamic and ambitious organisation. Their work extends beyond delivering a world-class Carnival, including smaller events and educational programmes. They are both curators of the past and catalysts for the future - informing, engaging and inspiring people socially and artistically. The Carnival 365 project brings the history and heritage of Carnival to communities all year round. This includes a Schools and Education Programme, which empowers people with the knowledge of cultural diversity, equality and more. Similarly, their community engagement work brings people together from a range of backgrounds and helps stimulate economic benefits for local people.

After several dedicated years as Chair of the Board, the talented businessperson, food writer and musician, Levi Roots, will be stepping down in September 2024. The organisation is at an exciting time in its development - with lofty ambitions for 2024 and beyond. They’re seeking a Chair to guide the organisation through this period. They’re looking for a Chair who relishes community, culture and the arts, is passionate about music and Carnival, but also understands the fiduciary and governance responsibilities of the role.

As a key leadership role, the Chair will oversee the Board in setting the strategic direction and long-term company goals, ensuring they align with the overarching mission and values. They will help deliver an outstanding Carnival, celebrating Bristol’s African Caribbean communities. The Chair will collaborate with other stakeholders to develop and implement initiatives that advance organisational objectives and contribute towards a culture of innovation, inclusion and excellence.

They hope to hear from candidates who understand the current climate in the cultural sector, especially in the areas of funding, retaining talent, outreach, education, and community profile. The Chair will be an excellent communicator, with proven leadership experience in the arts or non-profit sectors. The ideal candidate has a strategic mindset and the ability to think creatively and analytically. A strong understanding of governance principles and experience working with diverse stakeholders and communities are also highly desirable.

This is a fantastic opportunity to help deliver an extraordinary Carnival to the people of Bristol, celebrating African Caribbean culture and inspiring local communities.
