Competitive Salary Offered

The John James Bristol Foundation is a grant making trust which was established by the philanthropy of John James in December 1983. Grants are made to charitable organisations working for the benefit of Bristol residents. The Trustees make every effort to grant money diversely in each financial year so that the overall wellbeing of as many residents of Bristol as possible is enhanced.

The main areas of focus for the John James Bristol Foundation (JJBF) are education, health, and the elderly. These are all areas supported by John James in his lifetime, and the Foundation’s trustees endeavour to continue the work he began.

The Foundation is now seeking a new Chief Executive to lead the organisation. The new CEO will be expected to lead all aspects of JJBF development, and in turn, will be supported by a small, committed, motivated, and highly experienced staff team of three part-time people.

The role of Chief Executive is key for the future of JJBF, and as such, they are seeking a leader who understands the history of the organisation, with a desire to champion, relish and preserve the grant giving of the Foundation. However, prospective candidates should also be comfortable with looking at ways to strengthen processes and systems to help make even more impact in the areas where grants are most needed in the future.

The Chief Executive is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Foundation’s affairs. This includes the preparation of monthly papers for Trustee meetings, liaising with Bristol Funders and the Bristol Older People’s Funders Association, and arranging visits with the Vice-Chair to potential beneficiaries.

In addition, the Chief Executive’s current responsibilities include:

  • Preparation of Quarterly Management Accounts and Annual Financial Statements.  Supervising all applications for grants and processing them as appropriate.

  •   Checking the monthly portfolio valuation from investment advisors.

  • Maintaining a record of the Foundation's commitments.

  • Completing the Annual Return and keeping Trustee details up to date for the Charity Commission for England and Wales.

The prospective CEO should have genuine empathy for the JJBF and fully understand and embrace the organisation’s history, aims, values and strategic goals. We are ideally seeking candidates with general management experience at a senior level within a charity environment encompassing finance, budgeting, and general administration. This is a hands-on role, so prospective candidates should enjoy working on daily, monthly, and annual tasks in equal measure, and be able to bring ideas to strengthen and develop future systems within the organisation.
